Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about American Extension Cords

An American extension cord uses NEMA connectors, typically the 2-prong NEMA 1-15P (Type A) or 3-prong grounded NEMA 5-15P (Type B) plug with matching 1-15R/5-15R receptacles, rated 15 A at 125 V (about 1875 W). It is built with SPT, SVT, SJT, SJTW, SJOW or SJOOW cable in 18 AWG to 12 AWG and is UL/ETL certified for the USA and Canada.

AWG is the wire gauge: 18 AWG is for light indoor use (lamps, electronics), 16 AWG for medium household loads, 14 AWG for heavier appliances and power tools, and 12 AWG for high-current tools and long outdoor runs. A heavier (lower-number) gauge reduces voltage drop and overheating; longer cords and higher loads require thicker wire.

Flat SPT-1/SPT-2/SPT-3 cords are for light indoor use; round SJT/SVT jacketed cords handle heavier indoor duty; W-rated cords such as SJTW and rubber SJOW/SJOOW add weather, sunlight, moisture and abrasion resistance for outdoor use, often with bright orange or yellow jackets. Outdoor cords should be used with GFCI protection.

A NEMA 5-15 circuit supplies up to 15 A at 125 V (about 1875 W), but continuous loads should stay below 80% and the cord must be rated for the current with a short, heavy-gauge lead. Use 14 AWG or 12 AWG for power tools and high-wattage appliances, avoid daisy-chaining cords, and never coil a loaded cord; high-draw equipment may need a 20 A circuit instead.

Yes. We manufacture UL and ETL listed extension cords using RoHS/REACH/PAHS and Proposition 65 compliant cable from 18 AWG to 12 AWG, in single-outlet, multi-outlet and Y-splitter forms, custom 1-100 ft lengths, colors and safety covers. MOQ is 200-1000 pieces, samples take 7-15 days and production is 15-20 working days.
