What is a UK cable reel?

A UK cable reel is a portable drum carrying a British extension lead fitted with BS 1363 (Type G) socket-outlets, typically 2, 3 or 4 outlets rated 13 A at 250 V, supplied with H05VV-F 3G1.5 or 3G2.5 cable in lengths from about 5 m to 50 m. UK reels are BSI/UKCA certified and include thermal cut-out overload protection and a power indicator light, with IP44 outdoor options.

What safety protection is built into a British cable reel?

UK reels include a thermal cut-out (overload protection) that trips if the drum is overloaded or overheated, a neon power indicator and, on many models, individually switched sockets and child-resistant safety shutters. Fully unwinding the reel under high load prevents heat build-up, and the cut-out can usually be reset with a button after cooling.

Should I use 3G1.5 or 3G2.5 cable on a 13A UK reel?

H05VV-F 3G1.5 supports typical 13 A household and garden loads on shorter drums, while 3G2.5 is chosen for longer reels and heavier continuous loads to reduce voltage drop and heating. The G indicates three cores including the protective earth; IP44-rated versions with flexible cable are available for outdoor use.

Can a UK cable reel be used outdoors?

Standard indoor reels are IP20/IP40 for dry locations; IP44 versions with weather-resistant sockets and shuttered outlets provide splash resistance for gardens and outdoor work, but they are not waterproof for immersion and should be kept out of standing water and driving rain, ideally with the connection protected and used on an RCD-protected circuit.

Do you supply custom UK cable reels?

Yes. We manufacture BSI/UKCA and CE compliant UK reels with RoHS, REACH and PAHS compliant cable, custom length (5-50 m), socket count, drum color, cable specification and branding, with thermal protection as standard. MOQ is 200-1000 pieces, samples take 7-15 days and production is 15-20 working days.
