Common questions about IEC 60309 CEE industrial plugs, sockets, cords and reels

IEC 60309, also called CEE industrial connectors, is an international system of heavy-duty plugs, sockets, appliance inlets and connectors with current ratings commonly from 16A to 125A, color-coded by voltage and mechanically keyed to prevent mismatching.

Yellow indicates 100 to 130V, blue indicates 200 to 250V single-phase, and red indicates 380 to 415V three-phase. The earth pin clock position, such as 4h, 6h or 9h, codes the voltage and frequency so only compatible connectors mate.

IP44 connectors are splash and foreign-object protected for general indoor and sheltered outdoor use, while IP67 connectors are dust-tight and withstand temporary immersion for washdown, construction and harsh outdoor environments.

Common ratings are 16A, 32A, 63A and 125A, with 2P+E three-wire single-phase, 3P+E four-wire three-phase, and 3P+N+E five-wire three-phase plus neutral configurations to match the load and supply.
