Dryer EV Power Extension Cords

NEMA 14-30 is rated 30A at 125/250V and suits electric dryers and lower-power Level 2 charging, while NEMA 14-50 is rated 50A and supports higher-power EV chargers (typically up to 40A continuous under the 80% rule) as well as ranges. Both are 4-prong connectors with two hots, neutral and ground; older 3-prong 10-30/10-50 outlets lack an equipment ground.

Use 10 AWG for a 30A 14-30 circuit and 6 AWG for a 50A 14-50 circuit, keeping the cord as short as practical to minimize voltage drop during multi-hour charging. EV charging is a continuous load, so the cord and connector must be rated for continuous duty at or above the EVSE current; do not use a light-duty household extension cord.

It can be safe when the outlet, wiring, cord and EVSE are correctly rated and the connection is direct and secure, but hard-wiring a dedicated 14-50 circuit is preferred. Use only a heavy-gauge, UL-listed cord rated for continuous load, avoid daisy-chaining cords, and ensure the EVSE is set to the circuit limit; when in doubt consult a qualified electrician.
