THHN, THWN-2, PVC Nylon Insulated Building Wire

THHN and THWN-2 are the UL 83 thermoplastic building wires pulled through conduit and raceway in residential, commercial and industrial work, and the two designations normally appear on one print legend: THHN is rated 90°C in dry locations, THWN-2 adds a 90°C wet rating, and both are limited to 75°C where the conductor is exposed to oil or gasoline. The construction is a PVC insulation with a nylon cover, in 14AWG to 750kcmil copper, solid at the small sizes and stranded from 8AWG up, in the ten standard building-wire colours. Many constructions are additionally listed as MTW under UL 1063 for machine tool wiring and as AWM under UL 758, so the same reel can serve a panel, a raceway and an appliance harness.

Common questions about this flexible power cable

Location rating. THHN is rated 90°C in dry locations, while THWN-2 adds a 90°C wet rating, so the same conductor can be used in a wet or damp raceway. Most modern building wire is dual marked THHN/THWN-2 on one print legend, with a 75°C limit where the conductor is exposed to oil or gasoline.

14AWG to 750kcmil copper, solid at the small sizes and stranded from 8AWG and larger, in the ten standard building wire colours: black, white, red, blue, green, yellow, brown, orange, purple and gray, with green reserved for the ground conductor.

Many constructions are dual or triple rated: AWM under UL 758 at 105°C dry and 80°C in oil, and MTW under UL 1063 for machine tool wiring. The extra ratings are worth asking for because they let one reel cover a raceway pull, a control panel and an appliance harness, but they have to appear on the print legend of the reel you receive.

In conduit and raceway for branch circuits and feeders in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, in both dry and wet locations, and inside control panels when the MTW rating is also carried. It is a single building wire, not a flexible cord, so it is not used as a lead with a plug on it.

The 75°C or 90°C column of the ampacity table depends on the temperature rating of the terminals and the equipment the conductor lands on, and the ampacity adjustment is made for more than three current-carrying conductors in a raceway. The 90°C rating of the wire is not by itself the number to size the circuit with.
