Common questions about IEC 60320 power cord connectors

IEC 60320 is the international standard for appliance couplers used to connect detachable power cords to electrical equipment rated up to 250 V. Odd-numbered parts (C5, C7, C13, C15, C19) are female cord connectors, while even-numbered parts (C6, C8, C14, C16, C20) are the matching male appliance inlets.

Each cord connector pairs with one specific appliance inlet: C5 with C6, C7 with C8, C13 with C14, C15 with C16, C17 with C18 and C19 with C20. Identify the inlet fitted to your equipment, then choose the cord that terminates in the matching odd-numbered connector; mismatched pairs such as C13 into C16 will not seat.

C13/C14 is rated 10 A at 250 V (15 A under some 125 V approvals) and is the common coupler on PCs, monitors and printers. C19/C20 is the larger 16 A (up to 20 A at 125 V) coupler for high-current servers, UPS systems and rack PDUs, and its body is wider so a C13 plug cannot fit a C20 inlet.

The IEC 60320 connector end is internationally standardized and accepted worldwide, but the wall-plug end must match the local mains: NEMA for North America, CEE 7 Schuko for Europe, BS 1363 for the UK and AS/NZS 3112 for Australia.
