What is an IEC C5 connector (Mickey Mouse / cloverleaf)?

The C5 is a 3-pole earthed female connector rated 2.5 A at 250 V, nicknamed Mickey Mouse or cloverleaf for its three rounded lobes. It plugs into a C6 inlet and is most familiar as the cord on laptop power adapters, projectors, some monitors and small appliances that need an earth but draw under 2.5 A.

What devices use a C5 power cord?

C5 cords are standard on many laptop AC adapters and power bricks, older projectors, certain LCD monitors, powered speakers and small electronic instruments that use the mating C6 inlet. The connector's compact 2.5 A size suits lower-power earthed equipment where a C13 would be unnecessarily large.

Can I use a C6 inlet with a C13 cord?

No. The C5 connector is the only mate for a C6 inlet; the larger C13 connector has a different contact layout and will not lock into a C6. If your device has a cloverleaf C6 inlet, you must use a C5-terminated cord with the appropriate national wall plug.

Is a C5 connector earthed and what is its maximum current?

Yes. Unlike the unearthed C7 figure-8, the C5 has three contacts including a protective earth and is rated 2.5 A at 250 V (roughly 625 VA). Equipment drawing more current, or requiring a 10 A supply, should use a C13/C14 coupler instead.
