What is an IEC C9 connector?

The C9 is a 2-pole, unearthed IEC 60320 cord connector rated 6 A at 250 V that mates with a C10 appliance inlet. It resembles a larger figure-8 coupler and was designed for higher-current double-insulated appliances than the 2.5 A C7, although it is uncommon compared with the earthed C13/C14 range.

What is the difference between a C7/C8 and a C9/C10 coupler?

Both are two-pole and unearthed, but the C7/C8 is rated 2.5 A while the larger C9/C10 is rated 6 A at 250 V for more powerful Class II equipment. Physically the C9/C10 is bigger and its contacts are spaced differently, so the two are not interchangeable.

Does a C9 connector have an earth pin?

No. The C9/C10 is a 2-pole coupler with line and neutral only and no protective-earth contact, and it is intended for double-insulated Class II appliances rated up to 6 A. Earthed equipment in this current range should use a C13/C14 coupler.

Where is the C9/C10 coupler typically found?

Because it is a less common sheet of the IEC 60320 standard, C9/C10 appears mainly on specific older projectors, large audio devices, motors and double-insulated appliances designed for certain markets. Always verify the inlet marking and rating plate rather than assuming a C7 or C13 cord will fit.
