They are built to IS 1293 and use the Indian Type M three-round-pin plug (6A and 16A), similar to BS 546. The smaller Type D (5A/6A) and Type C Europlug are also used for low-power and double-insulated devices.
They are rated 250V AC at 6A, 10A and 16A for the Indian 230V, 50Hz mains.
Yes. Plugs, sockets and cords fall under BIS compulsory certification and must carry the BIS/ISI mark, with the manufacturer registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards, for sale and import into India.
Type D (BS 546 5A) is the smaller three-round-pin plug for low-current devices, while Type M (IS 1293 16A) is the larger, higher-current version. The pin sizes differ so they are not interchangeable; the correct current rating must be selected.
They are available with IEC 60320 C5, C7, C13, C15, C19 and C20 connectors, including straight and right-angle C13/C19 versions, plus open-end cords.
Type D and M plugs are used across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and parts of Africa and the Middle East, with Type M also standard in South Africa (SANS 164-1). BIS marking is still required specifically for India.
