AWM 1015

AWM 1015, PVC Insulated Single Conductor Appliance Wiring Material

UL AWM style 1015 is the single-conductor PVC hook-up wire that most North American appliance and control-panel wiring is built on. The style page allows 80°C, 90°C or 105°C with a 600Vac or 750Vdc rating over a wide size range from 30AWG to 2000kcmil, in solid or stranded copper, and it carries a horizontal flame rating with optional 60°C or 80°C oil resistance. Electrical and electronic tags may add a 2500V peak marking for electronic use. Because the size range is so wide, the same style covers a 30AWG control lead and a 500kcmil power conductor: specify the size, the temperature class and the colour code on the order, and state whether the construction has to be oil resistant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this flexible power cable

Style 1015 is a single-conductor hook-up wire for the internal wiring of appliances and electrical equipment. The style page carries a 600Vac or 750Vdc rating with 80°C, 90°C or 105°C temperature classes, so it covers control leads, motor and heater wiring, and panel wiring where a flexible PVC wire is wanted. Tags may also list a 2500V peak marking for electronic use.

The style runs from 30AWG up to 2000kcmil in solid or stranded copper, so a single style number covers both a thin control wire and a large power conductor. Insulation walls step up with the size, from 30 mils average at 30AWG to 9AWG up to 125 mils at 1100 to 2000kcmil. Colour code, stripe and cut length are set on the order.

Temperature and wall thickness. Style 1015 allows 80°C, 90°C or 105°C over a wider size range, while 1017 is fixed at 80°C over 22AWG to 8AWG with a 45 mil minimum average insulation wall. At the same gauge the 1017 wall is thicker, which protects better against chafing in a crowded panel, but it cannot be used where the conductor runs above 80°C.

Only if the application calls for it. The style page makes 60°C and 80°C oil resistance an option rather than a requirement, so an order that meets oil, coolant or lubricant mist has to state the oil rating and it will be printed on the wire. Orders for dry, clean equipment normally take the standard PVC compound.

No. AWM is a UL 758 recognised component for wiring inside equipment, while a power cord is a UL 62 or UL 817 cord set with a plug that goes into a wall socket. AWM 1015 wire is used behind the enclosure, on harnesses and inside appliances, and it is not sold as a lead with a plug on it.
