World voltage and power plug specifications

A cord that suits one market is not automatically right for the next: the plug shape, the voltage, the frequency and the safety approval all change with the destination country. The tables on this page cover the markets we ship to, and the certification each one requires.

The short version

  • 100 to 127V at 60Hz: North America, Japan and part of Latin America.
  • 220 to 240V at 50Hz: Europe, the UK, Australia, most of Asia and Africa.
  • Plug families in our range: NEMA 1-15 and NEMA 5-15, BS 1363, CEE 7, AS/NZS 3112, SI 32, NBR 14136 and TIS 166-2549.

How to specify a power cord for a new market

  1. Fix the destination market first. The country tables above give you the voltage, the frequency and the plug standard.
  2. Match the voltage and frequency your appliance is rated for, and pick a cable rated for the current it draws.
  3. Pick the plug for that market: NEMA 5-15 for the United States, BS 1363 for the UK, CEE 7/7 across continental Europe, AS/NZS 3112 for Australia and New Zealand.
  4. Pick the connector end: IEC 60320 C13 or C19, or a stripped end for equipment wiring.
  5. Confirm the approval the market requires, then ask for the certificate that covers that part number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to use the world voltage, frequency and plug type reference for export cords

It lists each country or region, its nominal mains voltage, its frequency in hertz, and the plug and socket standard used there, so you can match the correct power cord and approval to each market.

North America, Japan and parts of Central and South America generally use 100 to 127V, while Europe, the UK, Australia, China, Africa and most of Asia use 220 to 240V. Equipment must match the local voltage unless it is rated for a wide 100 to 240V range.

A plug adapter only changes the physical shape of the plug and does not change voltage. Dual-voltage devices marked 100 to 240V need only an adapter, while single-voltage appliances need a step-up or step-down converter or transformer.

The USA and Canada use NEMA Type A and B, the UK uses BS 1363 Type G, most of Europe uses CEE 7 Type C, E and F, Australia and New Zealand use AS/NZS 3112 Type I, and Japan uses JIS Type A and B.

Frequency is a historical grid standard: most of the world uses 50Hz while North America and parts of Asia and South America use 60Hz. Modern switch-mode electronics usually accept both, but motors, timers and clocks can be frequency sensitive.

Match the plug standard, the rated voltage and the required certification for that market, then choose the connector end. The country table above gives the voltage, frequency and plug standard, and the plug type cards list the markets for each shape.

The mark follows the destination market: UL or ETL in the United States, CSA in Canada, VDE, TUV and the ENEC marks in Europe, ASTA or BSI for BS 1363 in the UK, SAA and RCM in Australia and New Zealand, PSE in Japan, KC in Korea, BSMI in Taiwan, Inmetro in Brazil, SABS in South Africa, SASO and GCC in the Gulf, TISI in Thailand, SNI in Indonesia, PSB in Singapore, SII in Israel, EAC in Russia and the Eurasian Union, and CE in the European Union. The marks we hold are listed on this page.

Yes. The cable and the connector end stay the same and the plug is moulded for the destination market, so one equipment build can ship to several countries on approved plugs. Send the destination country, the appliance rating and the connector type, IEC 60320 C13, C19 or a stripped end, and we will match the plug and the approval.
