Common questions about IEC 60320 C22 Power Cords Connector

The C22 is the high-temperature, 3-pole earthed male appliance inlet in the 16 A IEC 60320 sheet that receives a C21 connector. It is the hot-condition equivalent of the C20 inlet, built with heat-resistant materials and extra keying for high-current equipment that runs hot.

The C20 is the standard 16 A inlet rated around 70 C, while the C22 is rated for a hot condition near 150 C and carries additional keyways so only a C21 connector fits. The two look similar in size but are not interchangeable where high temperature is involved.

The C21 female cord connector is the designated mate for a C22 inlet. A standard C19 is blocked by the extra keyway, which deliberately enforces use of the heat-rated C21 cord on equipment that could otherwise overheat an ordinary coupler.

C22 inlets appear on high-power heating and industrial equipment, certain stage-lighting and entertainment power systems, and specialized machinery requiring both 16 A current and a 150 C-class coupler. It is uncommon in ordinary IT equipment, which normally uses C20.
