Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Japan PSE JET Power Cords
They are built to JIS C 8303 and use the Japanese Type A plug (two parallel flat pins, matching NEMA 1-15) and the grounded Type B plug (with a round earth pin, matching NEMA 5-15). Both 2-pin and 3-pin versions are supplied.
Japan uses 100V mains, and the cords are rated 125V AC at 7A, 12A and 15A. Frequency is 50Hz in eastern Japan (Tokyo) and 60Hz in western Japan (Osaka); the cords work at both frequencies.
Yes. Power cords and cord sets fall under Japan's Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law and require PSE marking, issued through registered certification bodies such as JET. The diamond PSE mark applies to specified products and the round mark to others.
Japanese Type A and NEMA 1-15 share the same flat-blade geometry and are physically compatible at 100-125V, but JIS C 8303 has stricter dimensional and marking requirements and many Japanese cords use a separate ground lead instead of a third pin. PSE approval is still required for Japan.
They can be terminated with IEC 60320 C5, C7, C13, C15, C19 and C20 connectors, including right-angle C19 versions, as well as open-end cords for equipment manufactured for the Japanese market.
Many older Japanese homes historically had ungrounded outlets, so double-insulated appliances use 2-pin Type A cords, with grounding handled by a separate earth wire or dedicated grounded outlet. 3-pin Type B cords are supplied for appliances that require protective earth.
