When should a right-angle C21 be chosen over a straight one?

Choose the right-angle C21 where equipment sits close to a wall or in a crowded rack: the 90-degree exit removes the straight connector's rear depth and avoids a sharp bend at the C21/C22 joint, while keeping the 16 A rating and still mating with C22.

Can a C19 be used instead of the 155 °C right-angle C21?

No - a 70 °C C19 cannot latch into a C22 hot-condition inlet, while the 16 A C21 mates with C22, is rated 155 °C and is downward-compatible with C20; specify C21 for high-temperature heating and lighting.

Why is the right-angle C21 rated to 155 °C rather than 70 °C?

C21/C22 is the high-temperature 16 A coupling, specified for industrial heating, foundry and lighting equipment where a 70 °C C19/C20 would be unsafe; the C22 male plug mates with a C21 female connector.

The standard is divided into several parts, with the most important being IEC 60320-1 (General requirements), which has undergone multiple revisions: the first edition was published in 1994, the second in 2001, the third in 2015, and the latest effective edition is the fourth edition, IEC 60320-1:2021, released on 27 July 2021.
