What is the IEC 60320 straight C7?

The straight C7 is the IEC 60320 female line connector (the cord-set / appliance-coupler side) that mates with a C8 connector, rated 2.5 A at 125/250 V with a 70 °C temperature class and no earth contact - a 2-core part for Class II / double-insulated equipment only. It is typically used on TVs, audio gear, game consoles, routers and non-grounded adapters (the figure-8 cord).

What is the advantage of the straight C7 connector?

The straight C7 has an in-line cable exit and gives the simplest, most universally compatible fit on TVs, audio gear, game consoles, routers and non-grounded adapters (the figure-8 cord); angled versions save rear clearance and locking versions resist vibration, but the straight C7 remains the default for general use at 2.5 A, 70 °C.

Can the figure-8 straight C7 be swapped for a C5 or C13?

No. The 2-core, non-earthed C7 mates only with a C8 inlet and has a different pin pattern from the earthed three-lobed C5 or the larger earthed C13; it is for Class II devices such as TVs and adapters. A polarized C8 inlet needs the polarized C7.

Which standard defines the straight C7?
